Fitness privacy policy
Last updated: 14 October 2026
This policy is about the Fitness app for Android and iPhone (nl.chiemjanssen.fitness), made by Chiem Janssen in the Netherlands. I am responsible for the app and you can reach me at chiemjanssen@gmail.com.
In short: there is no account and no server. Your workouts, weight, measurements, photos, meals and coach chats stay on your phone. Only a few things leave it: food lookups at Open Food Facts, the one-time download of the coach model, ads in the free version and, only if you agree, anonymous usage statistics.
1. What stays on your phone
Everything you enter is stored only on your phone, in an encrypted database: your profile (such as birth date, sex, height and goal), weigh-ins, body measurements, progress photos, workouts, meals and foods, and your settings. The encryption key, and your app lock PIN in scrambled (hashed) form, are kept in your phone's secure storage. I never receive any of this.
- The app is excluded from Android's automatic cloud backup, so this data is not copied to Google Drive.
- You can export all your data to a file yourself (Settings). That file is not encrypted; you decide where it goes.
- Uninstalling the app deletes all of it.
2. The coach
The coach is an AI model that runs entirely on your phone. Your questions and its answers never leave the phone and are not saved after you close the app. To use it, the app downloads the model once from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). Like any download, Hugging Face sees your IP address; nothing else is sent.
3. Food search
The built-in food table works offline. When you search for a product or scan a barcode, the app sends that search text or barcode to Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org) to look up the product. Open Food Facts sees that request and your IP address, not who you are or anything else from the app.
4. Working out together
A workout invite goes directly from one phone to the other, through a QR code or NFC. It contains only the workout (exercises and sets) and does not go through the internet.
5. Usage statistics (optional, Android)
If you agree, the Android app sends anonymous usage statistics to Google Firebase Analytics, so I can see which features are used and what to improve. Nothing is sent before you agree, and you can turn it off at any time under Settings > Privacy > Share usage statistics.
- What is sent: which screens and features you use, counts, choices and durations (for example "a workout was finished, 5 exercises, 52 minutes"), the app version, phone model, operating system version and a random ID for this installation.
- What is never sent: your weight, measurements, photos, calories or grams, food or workout names, notes, search text, chats, name or PIN. The advertising ID is not used.
- Legal basis: your consent. Google processes this data for me and keeps it for a limited time (at most 14 months).
6. Ads (free version)
The free version shows one ad a day, through Google AdMob. In the EU, the UK and Switzerland, Google's consent form asks you first whether ads may be personalised; you can also refuse. On iPhone, Apple asks whether the app may track you, and the advertising identifier is only used if you allow it.
- To show ads, measure them and prevent fraud, Google may use your device's advertising ID, IP address and device information. How Google uses this: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- The app never passes your health data, foods or workouts to Google or any ad partner.
- You can change your choice under Settings > Ad privacy choices. Buying Pro removes the ads.
7. Purchases and tips
Pro and tips are paid through Google Play or the App Store. I do not receive your payment details. Whether you have Pro is stored on your phone.
8. Reminders and permissions
Workout reminders are scheduled on your phone itself and show at most the name of a workout. The app asks for permissions only when a feature needs them: the camera (QR codes, barcodes, progress photos), your photos (to add a progress photo), notifications (reminders and the rest timer) and NFC (workout invites).
9. Children
The app is not meant for children under 16.
10. Your rights
Because I do not store any data about you, there is nothing I can show, correct or delete; you control everything in the app itself. For the statistics and ads, Google is the party that processes the data: turn them off in the app, or reset your advertising ID in your phone's settings. Questions? Email me. You can also file a complaint with your data protection authority, such as the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens in the Netherlands or the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali in Italy.
11. Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with a new date.
